TFCA Career Enhancement Program

Introduction

The TFCA has entered into a cooperative arrangement with TAFE Tasmania, Forestworks and MEGT Australian Apprenticeship Centre to provide high quality traineeship opportunities for Tasmanians keen to start a career in the forest industry.

This new approach builds on the already strong commitment undertaken by many businesses to ensure that the industry supports highly skilled, motivated and competent employees.

This initiative will make it easier for TFCA’s members to recruit and retain quality apprentices under the National Australian Apprenticeship System and ensure employers and employees maximise the benefits a tailored training and support approach.

The Process…

TFCA, Forestworks and other industry stakeholders constructively and proactively working together to identify potential employees.

Potential employees are invited to meet with employers to discuss the range of options and level of support available through the Career Enhancement Program.

When a TFCA member makes an offer of employment, TFCA will assist with preparing employment documentation at no charge to the member – TFCA will also work directly with MEGT Australian Apprenticeship Centre and Forestworks to facilitate the documentation.

MEGT

The member will have to pay the employee’s wages and on costs and release the employee for specialised training for around 6 days over the two year period of the training contract– TFCA will advise the appropriate wage rate.

TAFE will provide the majority of training with the assistance of TFCA’s Field Officer for in-field licensing assessments, skills coordination etc.

Participants will work towards obtaining a Certificate II or Certificate III in Harvesting and Haulage.

TFCA will continue to provide human resource assistance to the member throughout the life of the program i.e. update employment contracts, handle disciplinary requirements etc.

There will also be an opportunity for existing employees to achieve nationally recognised qualifications through skills recognition and where necessary top up training at the same time.

Additionally each trainee will use the Training Simulator provided by TFCA in partnership with the Australian Government, Tasmanian Forest Industry Training Board and Forestworks.

The Training Simulator;  encompassing modules for harvesting, forwarding and excavation, will be utilised to provide basic to intermediate level operator training to all Career Enhancement Program apprentices.  This simulator was made available with the support of:
